Longlegs fucking sucked oh my goddddd
Literal Pinterest board ass movie. I wish I had been watching whatever movie Nic Cage thought he was in because that seemed like it would have been a lot more fun to see.
The first part of this movie (really just the opening sequence) was one of the better horror short films I've seen. Such an excellent command over the camera; really playing into the stated working idea of this movie, that one day a dude can just pull up to your house and fuck your shit up. Was really hoping we'd keep developing this idea, ala the Cure "people are so divorced from their own pre/subconscious mind that someone asking them basic questions about their internal lives makes them realize they actually want to murder people" concept, but nope! Perkins doesn't seem to actually understand how to weave his frightening concept into the structure of his film the way Kurosawa does - the hypnotic cinematography and sound design of Cure, the toying with the audience's impulse to view his "killer" as working via supernatural means - so we instead get to deal with tired horror tropes like the effeminate male killer, ThE cYcLiCaL nAtUrE oF tRaUmA, Satan worshippers, creepy doppelgang- I mean dolls (I won't even get into the Twin Peaks ripoff.)
I mention Cure here because I keep seeing people say that this movie reminded them of it. Hearing this comparison makes me want to die. Cure actually challenges you! The creep factor there doesn't revolve around a scary protagonist - Mamiya's a lil soft baby in an oversized sweater. The real creep factor is that Mamiya does not possess some demonic power at all - he's just asking questions. Cure is blood curdling because it makes us aware of a killer that exists inside of our coworkers, our friends, our waiters, our lovers, our families. Longlegs is boring because it ultimately shields us from the frightening nature of its core premise. Worried about someone pulling up to your house and fucking your shit up? Well don't worry, we won't spend much time exploring that because we've got some more creepy dolls lined up for you :)
